Twins of the Forest

Twins of the Forest

All civilisations have myths and folklore about twins, some half the whole others good and bad.Its said some villages killed one at birth to give magical powers to the other  twin. #folklorethursday #myths #narrative #storytelling

Divine Guidance

Divine Guidance

This image is close to the original sketch i made, its much rougher around the edges than previous images i have made in this style.

I was wanting a Jeanne d’Arc figure and think it works well.

6 -a perfect number

6 -a perfect number

In maths 6 is a perfect number. It also occurs in many of the worlds religions . From man being created on the 6th day, to the Buddhist Samsara, the wheel of life where there are 6 spheres of existence . The Christian bible is littered with references to the number 6

In Rome they had 6 Vestal Virgins. Girls chosen from noble birth to be charged with keeping the soul of Rome. This meant keeping an everlasting fire alight. Should it go out would mean bad omens for Rome and its armies.

The goddess Vesta was the goddess of fire. Vestals were chosen from the age of 6six and were married to the city of Rome.  To break from their virgin vow meant death. In 114 BC the Vestal Marcia took a lover. As punishment she was condemned to death and buried alive

Waiting out Time

Waiting out Time

Waiting out time on Mount Oylmpus

The summit of Mount Olympus, stands the meeting place of the gods. The mountain in northern Greece was said to be where the gods and goddesses built their palaces. Any of the gods could live on the great mountain summit, but no human was ever allowed there under any conditions.

The image was made with a different sampling technique. The source was shot for a rotating gif.

The Dolls Come Alive at Night

The Dolls Come Alive at Night

The Dolls Come Alive at Night.

As a child, i had an overactive imagination and believed that once out of the room objects would come to life. I think many of us do, hence the movie Toy Story was so popular.

I also had some puppets with strange eyes that were always disturbing and felt their eyes followed me around my room. They mostly lived in a draw out of sight. But i was always aware they were there – waiting.

The Storyteller

The Storyteller

The Storyteller.

One of the great experiences in life is sat around a camp fire in the woods telling stories, the scarier the better. There is always ambient noises of nature all around to add to the atmosphere, the vulnerability of your back to the darkness with someone weaving a tale into your imagination.

Wishing Tree of Winchelsea

Wishing Tree of Winchelsea

One of the images from the Brightling to Dymchurch series. Winchelsea is one of those beaches not as popular as Camber which has the benefit that there are never too many people on the beach. It is a favourite place of mine, especially at low tide with its  sands and its 6000 year old sunken forest at Pett Level.

Killing Time

Killing Time

Killing time, A Romney Ghost

I found myself standing outside St Mary in the Marsh church on Pickneybush lane in a foggy autumn twilight. In the eerie silence you become aware of sounds that go unnoticed, rustles in the undergrowth, water dripping from the fence, a distant crow, time has stood still. The trees in the graveyard take on different shapes, one is like a giant stone dragon, another has the face of a demon. St Marys is a fortress of a Norman church, built on a site of earlier Pagan and Saxon settlement.

The Dymchurch Smuggler

The Dymchurch Smuggler

“From Brightling to Dymchurch”

“Remember to Forget” – The Dymchurch Smuggler

When I was a young lad my father took me to the cinema to see Disneys Sword in the Stone, which was great, but what caught my imagination was the ‘B’ movie. It was Patrick McGoohan in Dr Syn Alias The Scarecrow. It was about smugglers on Romney Marsh. I thought it was brilliant, even more so as we went on holiday there and my brother and I could act out the roles of the smugglers in the sand dunes of Camber.

Although Dr Syn was a fictional character created by the author Russell Thorndike. The story was  inspired by historical smuggling that was rife on the south coast. Gangs such as the Hawkhurst Gang  frequented the Mermaid Inn in Rye once the centre of smuggling on the marsh.

The whole of this part of the coast in the South East of England is full of stories of Brandy and Wool smuggling from the 18th Century.

I used to read the Thorndike books of the adventures of Dr Syn of Dymchurch, as a pirate in the Americas and as the Scarecrow the smuggler on the marsh. Far better than Robin Hood.

Rye Foreign

Rye Foreign

Rye Foreign.

This image is from the series from Brightling the burial place of Mad Jack Fuller to Dymchurch on Romney Marsh the home to the fictional character Dr Syn the Scarecrow. Most of the material with a few exceptions was shot along the route. This picture is one of the exceptions with the background being the ceiling of the Pantheon in Roma, one of my favourite spaces in the world. The original background that was shot in Rye Foreign didn’t work and I was already playing with this background, just added it to see what it looked like and I couldn’t go back, for me it worked.

Gestalt

Gestalt

First for a while, been away collecting new images. This image has been sat on my desktop for a couple of months not quite finished. The problem was with the background. I tried tow different backgrounds but in the end reverted to the original and worked on modifying it.
