Spring cleaning the drives and came across this that I never got around to finishing, looks quite good unfinished so I thought I would give it an airing on the photoblog.

John Jerwood

John Jerwood

I started this portrait of John Jerwood as an experiment in starting points for my work. I have been shooting  a bit of film again recently and wanted to explore the differences using a black and white print as a starting point and bringing colour into the image. I pulled a print out of the library for this, there is a difference between a black and white hand print and converting a colour digital file, even if i were to put it through a program like Silver Efex with its emulsion emulations, it not quite the same.

John Jerwood was a fascinating man, I was commisioned to make his portrait as he was being interviewed, so i was very much responding to his movements whilst he was talking.

When you are in those situations as photographers  to get the most from the situation we have to blend, not to irritate the subject or the writer.

I guess the date for this original pic is about 1990, The session took place in a hotel in Piccadilly in London, I made the pictures quite quickly, he was an easy subject and instead of packing the camera away and disappearing, i sat in on the interview. He was a fascinating man with an interesting life story. He was based in Japan and was a dealer in fine pearls. He talked about how he used the money he had accumulated to set up foundations to benefit the arts. John Jerwood died a while later, but his foundations are still flourishing. I do like the Jerwood Space in London, south of the river close to where i used to live and have visited many shows there.

I made several versions over the past months and settled on this one as I not only liked it as an image but felt it caught the spirit of the man.

Twins of the Forest

All civilisations have myths and folklore about twins, some half the whole others good and bad.Its said some villages killed one at birth to give magical powers to the other  twin. #folklorethursday #myths #narrative #storytelling

from a distant land

from a distant land

I am continually asked how long an image takes to build. My usual reply is from a day to a month. This one started some three years ago and i got distracted and its one of six that i have used these cold dark days to finish. Jan 2018

I parked the initial version of the masque section on the main website but it was always my intention to finish it in this way.  London 2018

This image is close to the original sketch i made, its much rougher around the edges than previous images i have made in this style.

I was wanting a Jeanne d’Arc figure and think it works well.

6 -a perfect number

6 -a perfect number

In maths 6 is a perfect number. It also occurs in many of the worlds religions . From man being created on the 6th day, to the Buddhist Samsara, the wheel of life where there are 6 spheres of existence . The Christian bible is littered with references to the number 6

In Rome they had 6 Vestal Virgins. Girls chosen from noble birth to be charged with keeping the soul of Rome. This meant keeping an everlasting fire alight. Should it go out would mean bad omens for Rome and its armies.

The goddess Vesta was the goddess of fire. Vestals were chosen from the age of 6six and were married to the city of Rome.  To break from their virgin vow meant death. In 114 BC the Vestal Marcia took a lover. As punishment she was condemned to death and buried alive

Waiting out Time

Waiting out Time

Waiting out time on Mount Oylmpus

The summit of Mount Olympus, stands the meeting place of the gods. The mountain in northern Greece was said to be where the gods and goddesses built their palaces. Any of the gods could live on the great mountain summit, but no human was ever allowed there under any conditions.

The image was made with a different sampling technique. The source was shot for a rotating gif.

The Dolls Come Alive at Night

The Dolls Come Alive at Night

The Dolls Come Alive at Night.

As a child, i had an overactive imagination and believed that once out of the room objects would come to life. I think many of us do, hence the movie Toy Story was so popular.

I also had some puppets with strange eyes that were always disturbing and felt their eyes followed me around my room. They mostly lived in a draw out of sight. But i was always aware they were there – waiting.

The Storyteller

The Storyteller

The Storyteller.

One of the great experiences in life is sat around a camp fire in the woods telling stories, the scarier the better. There is always ambient noises of nature all around to add to the atmosphere, the vulnerability of your back to the darkness with someone weaving a tale into your imagination.

Theatre Ghost

Theatre Ghost

Every Theatre Has A Ghost.

Growing up next to a graveyard, which naturally was my playground, I never really believed in ghosts, i am quite happy wandering graveyards at night.

I have know a few who swear blind they have seen ghosts, I never judged them as I always kept an open mind, my rational side says no but by imaginative side would love it.

I have shot quite a few times in theatres, mostly actor portraits but you nearly always hear the tale, usually from the doormen of the ghosts that roam the theatres.  I like this ides of ghosts roaming, performing. Can you imagine Shakespeare performed by a cast of ghosts.

Is this why all theatres have a ghost light placed in the centre of the stage lit at night?

Then, a couple of years ago I arrived home from a shoot at about two in the morning. Where we live at two a.m.  its quiet, very quiet. So as to not disturb my neighbours I parked in a strip of the road where we don’t have houses, bordering a school playing field. I was just getting my lighting cases out of the back of the car when a womans voice coming from over my shoulder said “Are You Alright?” I shot out of my skin, turned around and there was nobody there. Nothing, just the quiet of the night. There is enough street lighting  to be able to see. The voice was spoken and I would say from no more than a couple of feet away.

No apparition, nothing. I did get a chill. I am still unable to explain it.

Wishing Tree of Winchelsea

Wishing Tree of Winchelsea

One of the images from the Brightling to Dymchurch series. Winchelsea is one of those beaches not as popular as Camber which has the benefit that there are never too many people on the beach. It is a favourite place of mine, especially at low tide with its  sands and its 6000 year old sunken forest at Pett Level.
